"Ribbons of Fire"

As I was reading through the Shadow of the Mountain journal entry text I came across something interesting. Here are two quotes relating to the Watcher's battle with Rabican:

"The survivors of this battle who have reached us speak of ribbons of fire tearing flesh from bone..."

"...and thick clouds of poison which rotted whole formations of men to pieces in moments. Our wizards were powerless to stop the carnage."

There are a few possibilities for what these could mean. The theory that I found on this site in the Shadow of the Mountain journal entry section was that Warlocks were present, as they can attack with both fire and a cloudkill spell. Weren't the Warlocks loyal to the Deceiver though, and wasn't it the Watcher that killed Rabican?
Another possibility is that the Watcher himself brought this down upon Rabican's forces.
Does anyone have any input on this? Could there be any other possibilities?

Thanks,
The Sandman
