Well as far as I know, the Callieach were being hunted down by the Trow. And rather than letting the battle continue they destroyed themselves and many Trow at the same time by unleashing enmormous amounts of raw magical energy. This energy created the 'Great Devoid'.

There is much speculation as to what the great devoid is/does. Check the forum history for some very cool theories.
