But from what we know, the Trow destroyed *all* the old races and enslaved the new ones. Also, all the ancient races seem to be very alien; made from stone rather than flesh, like the Trow, or just gnarled and unusual in form (see the TFL comic). Ghols, on the other hand, are some of the most humanoid of the non-human characters--if Earth taxonomy has any meaning, I'd say they're evolved from some relative of the baboon. They certainly aren't alien enough to be one of the elder races. I think.
