: My question is, why was the dark occupieing the fort in

Good question; I've wondered the same thing. I don't have
answers but I do have a few thoughts.
The troops you fight here must have been sent to take
the fortress. A mere raiding party wouldn't have been
able to take the fort from the army Alric ordered to
gather there before he left Madrigal. However, Shiver
isn't here yet, or Alric would likely have been dead
before he took a step off the boat.
I think that Soulblighter must have some generals besides
Shiver to help him out. Perhaps some shades are commanding
relatively small detachments, one of which managed to seize
the fort in Tandem.
Also, while Alric and the journal writer are out to sea,
it's quite likely that Soulblighter's armies move around
without us knowing about it. Unfortunately, I don't have
access to Myth right now, so I can't check how long Alric
was at sea. Any takers?
