In Response To: The First Era (Forrest (at Work))

: Ok, I was just thinking about ages and eras and such, and
: I got to wondering, what was the first era like? How
: were things going back then? Who was the first
: Leveller, the first Hero, and what kind of armied did
: they use?

A questions I and many other philosophers have pondered for time beyond memory.

: What we do know: The Comet rose in the east.
: Tharsis erupted.
: The Leveller came from the east and the Hero from the
: west.
: It was a Dark era.
: The Trow ruled most of the world at that time, but didn't
: pay much attention to most of it.
: The Myrkridia were around as horrible wild animals, but
: nothing too bad.
: The Free Cities of the North had been settled by men.
: Humans and fir'Bolg were enemies.
: The Dwarves had no pyrotechnics.
: The Oghres were slaves to the Trow.
: The Barrier was a vast, temporate farmland, not a desert.

: We know that Tireces' defeat of the next Leveller was the
: first time magic was used to immobilize him; so magic
: probably played a very small role in the first Great
: War.

Well, humanity reaches the stage of settlement and passes from the nomadic lifestyle. Remember though that during this era of prehistory there will have almost definately been a point where tribal conflict was the world and the people lived a 'hunter-gatherer' life. Continuing with this theme of mirroring our own history, they probably could not read and write until the late age. This and the fact that they would have been nomadic for some time would have meant information could not have been shared so easily.

This in turn would have had a great bearing on magic, seeing as though it must be learnt, it would probably not have been very advanced if even existent until very late in the age (on that note, I wonder how magic was first discovered? Maybe humanity found one of the 49 dreams of Wyrd and learnt about basic magic from it...)

: Moagim's death "set the uneasy precedent that a
: Leveller's fate need not mirror his cause" - this
: could either be because Moagim was the first
: successfull Leveller in recorded history (the First
: Era was prehistoric), or because he really was the
: first Leveller to die and have his cause succeed
: anyway. I'd bet on the first explanation.

Me too, otherwise the cycle would get even more phmnyrrrred, and that's too much for my brain.

: So, with this info, anyone care to write a little
: narrative about the First Era?

I wonder what sort of army the Leveler did use then? Low-magic could have meant no necromancy, but then again it wouldn't have necessarily meant that. Moagim seems to have been the first to organise the Myrkridia into a sizeable force. Ghols were likely around for a long time (considering them remember the names of the 'dark gods'...). However, GURPS says that, 'Until recent decades, the vast majority of Ghols could not envision seeking a better life than the day-to-day pillaging that most still practice. That changed when they took up Balor's banner and exploited...' which implies that they were not organised into a vast mob before (and I think they'd remember if they were, considering them remembered the names of the dark gods. I believe I've said that before).

Mauls? I don't know. Someone else had better continue now, as ich bin tired!
