I think that being an avatar, he would have been able to tell if the crown was real or not. but your right, the heron guard would probably be able to tell the difference between the real and a fake. but the guards are hundreds or years old, and they arn't stupid. i think that they understood just as alric did, that the people needed an emperor to win, so they went along with the lie of the crown.
anybody read/watch the Postman? its the same thing. even if something is a lie, it can still be very powerful, and still inspire the masses to great deeds. it may be a lie, but i think it was the only way to win.
