Unfortunately he doesn't have a choice. There is no actual evidence that the cycle is broken, only the forlorn hope of a single Heron Guard. Obversely, there is enormous evidence for the fact that the Great Hero ALWAYS becomes the next age's Leveller. Alric is in the hot seat, I'm afraid.
I really like the idea that the Ibis Crown in M2 is one of the copies. Certainly, the Heron Guard would recognize this fact much more readily that Alric--he had never seen the thing before it was brought to him, while they had all spent hundreds of years defending it. I think it's possible that Alric didn't ever find out he was wearing a fake crown. The HG would have been very reluctant to tell him, after all: they need an Emperor pretty badly (it's the only way they can absolve their guilt, not to mention the fact they realize it's the only way to beat Soulblighter, and third, since they know he'll be the Leveller some day they might want to have a secret, something they can use against him when the time comes).
