Maybe, maybe not. I've heard that a bezerk can grab Balmung
in the Mausoleum & use it. I haven't done this myself -
does it seem as powerful then as when Alric wields it?

I suppose also the memory of its power got exaggerated
through myth & legend over time. But if it was a _total_
fraud, it makes sense that Ceiscoran would make replicas,
as this would guard against people finding the 'true' crown
and hence claiming the leadership of Cath Bruig. Every
crown a usurper (such as Balor) found would be useless,
hence would be discarded as a replica. Thus the true
crown could never be found, and the empire would be safe.
I think Cath Bruig came to grief because it relied on
deception and ruses, having lost its old strength. Now
Alric, obviously realising the Ibis crown is a gimmic, still
doesn't speak up, as he wants the empire, and wants his army
to grow in confidence. Doesn't bode well for the future of
his empire! Maybe this foray into deception is what starts
his decline into becoming the next leveller.
