We don't know if it's the same armor. I think you have to distinguish between what Balor's abilities are supposed to be and what the game makers were actually able to program. For instance, I understand (never tried it myself) that when you first meet Balor, you can flank him with your zerks and kill him while he's still chatting with Alric, although the level doesn't end afterwards. That doesn't mean that he's *supposed* to be killable that way, just that the programmers didn't script his actions properly. It's probably the same explanation in your case. The programmers figured that when the player first sees Balor he'll have his units attack him head on just to see what happens. Balor fries them with a thunderbolt, the player goes "Whoa!" and after that, he never goes near Balor until Alric tells him to. So the programmers didn't think they needed to bother making Balor invulnerable except when the Eblis Stone was being used; since no one was ever going to get near Balor at any other time (they thought), they might as well just leave his invulnerability off permanently. Of course, they didn't count on rebellious folks like you attacking Balor before or after Alric says to.
