Probably just really dusty, like old books. Of course, in Shiver's case there's also a strong smell of hairspray.

Good point! He could indeed be the Faceless Man. Since he was "turned from the Light", you'd expect the Faceless Man to have originally occupied an exalted place in the forces of the Light, and a position as Connacht's Avatara fits the bill. Do you think Alric's not trying to recruit more magic users because he knows that if he gets possessed by the Leveler, most of his Avatara will be corrupted as well?
