As far as I see it the Mahirs are eather Shade shadows (but I like the idea of this just being their Dark Power) or something else. Why did they only appear at the foot of Tharsis? Maybe the eruption, 60 yrs ago, disturbed them or released them. Being pure evil (ofcourse only speculating) they joined Soulblighter's side.
Or, another thought, could it be they who regained Soulblighter strenght after Balor was killed?
