In Response To: Re: sounds convincing, but one question... (Ares™)

: It's really a moot point, because there is no evidence
: backing up either side. Necessarily, if you believe my
: version of events, you would think that the Leveller
: flees Balor's body when the head is cut off.

: I see a lot of logical support for this...

: 1. If the leveller is trapped inside the head, Alric made
: a major and out-of-character mistake by throwing it in
: the devoid. Seems more likely that with all that infos
: he got from the big D in the desert, he would
: purposefully get rid of the head because it could
: prove dangerous in the future, he wouldn't accidently
: destroy it.

As Dan says, he was purposefully getting rid of it. It was supposed to fall forever without being destroyed. The fact that it blew up was probably due to some machination of Balor and/or the Leveller--a fail-safe to ensure that the spirit could escape in case of capture.

Think about what Alric told his army. "Balor has been killed before, and each time it has only made him stronger." Then he proceeds to have the head thrown in the Devoid. Now, from your argument, what he's saying is, "We've killed the Leveller before and it didn't work, but now I'm gonna really really kill him!" Which is a little unimaginative--okay, stupid. From our perspective, Alric's saying, "We've killed the Leveller before and it didn't work, so now I'm going to try something different--imprisoning him instead." Which is more characteristic of wily ol' Alric?

: 2. When other levellers are killed, they are sometimes
: imprisoned (under the mountains of Kor, etc), which
: begs the question of how the Leveller spirit escaped.
: Of course there are plenty of ways to explain that but
: its just going out of your way and inventing even more
: fiction to explain it and ignoring the simpler
: explanation.

*No* other levellers have been imprisoned, as far as we know. That guy under the mountains of Kor was ashes mixed with salt; that's not imprisonment, that's annihilation. Of the three prior Levellers, two were incinerated and Moagim was torn into quarters and had his intestines pulled out, and SOMETHING was done with his head. Clearly, Balor's corpse was treated much more kindly.
