Eh, it depends on your definition of "see". In the widest sense, I guess it just means something like "perceive the existence of, using your eyes," and in that sense you can see a black hole. I mean, we commonly speak of seeing other black objects, in spite of the fact that they don't produce any light which reaches our eyes either. You say, "Hey, I see a jet-black chair over there;" you don't usually say "Hey, I fail to see anything in a chair-shaped space over there; therefore, I infer the existence of a jet-black chair in that space." The absence of light is also visual information.

Regardless, I don't think the end-game special effect is particularly good evidence for the Devoid being a singularity; there's just too many other things in nature--pulsars, white dwarfs, high-yield Covenant weapons, people shining flashlights through fog :-)--that produce a "glowing jet" effect. Not that Nick was suggesting it *was* persuasive evidence, of course; he was just using it as an inspiration. I suppose the main question w. respect to the Devoid's nature would be--if it doesn't seem to be sucking the entire Mythworld into itself, what characteristics of a black hole or singularity *does* the Devoid have, and do you want to call it a black hole or singularity at all?
