Keep in mind that fetch are energy beings. They have no shadow of themselves. The shadow is cast by the skins they wear. The shades are undead avatara. Their shadow is probably caused by the black magic killing the light around them.
It's definitely safe to say the Mahir are magical. The could be a race of magical beings, or perhaps, as you suggest, they are the shadow of a sorcerer that has been detached somehow. Or maybe they are created through magical means. In any case, I doubt they come from another world, as Wyrd would surely strike them down.
