In Response To: Re: Another mistake in GURPS (SiliconDream =PN=)

: I believe Madrigal was the original capital because GURPS
: said so. killing duck thinks the Myth games show that
: GURPS is wrong, and I was simply pointing out that
: nowhere do the games say what the capital is--both
: Madrigal and Covenant are simply spoken of as
: "cities" by both the narrator and the
: manual.

I would say that the reason the narrator refered to covenant as a city was because it was no longer serving any real capacity in myth TFL (it being sevearly damaged and having no liveing populace within 100 miles) and because the capital had been moved in Myth 2.

: If you don't believe GURPS, it's understandable that you
: would think Covenant was more likely to be the
: capital. But doesn't Alric's choosing Madrigal suggest
: that it was the capital in the first place? Both
: cities were sacked by the Dark, so he could have
: rebuilt either as the capital with equal difficulty;
: although he had lived in Madrigal with the Nine, he'd
: grown up in Covenant. It seems to me that its history
: of being the capital was the key factor in his
: decision to reign from Madrigal.

First off, I dont beleave GURPS in this matter. It makes no sence for a goverment to move a capital unless under extreem diress. Even a goverment ruled by a regent would have stayed in the original Capital simply because moving that type of buerocratic info structure is very disruptive to all types of basic opperations.

The Fallen overran the southern reagions of The Provence in about a year. Soulblighter probobly would have moved faster because of his, shall we say, less than kind treatment of indiginent populations alowed him to keep his entire army on the move. That said, do you think the goverment could have moved the goverment to safty, concitering the tecnology avalable to them, before SB was upon them? I think not, so the Royle family was probobly traped in their capital when Soulblighter arrived.

Another point to conciter. Covenant had been abandoned for nearly two decades when the war ended; and a great part of the population of the provence had been killed or forced to the north. Madrical was taken less than three months before the armys of the dark collapsed, makeing it a very real posibilaty that which ever of the fallen that finaly took the city did not hang around to kill or subdue the surrounding population in favor of trying to clench total victory by taking Tandom befor the surrviving light troops could dig in.

So, when Alric returned to the West he would have had to re-gain athority quickly, or risk anarchy. Returning to the old capital, which now had no base network for a burocrasy, who's condition was not only damaged by two sackings by dark armies but also had been weathered for two decaded without anyone to repare the damages, makes no sence. Then when he (puting myself in Alrics shoes) examened Madrical, which had only been sacked once, very late in the war, so would not have been so badly weathered. Which was still very close to the most concentrated populaton base in the known world and which had been the largest of the Free Citys he/I would choose it as a new capital.

: I'd also point out, as a minor bit of supporting
: evidence, that when the Legion are approaching
: Madrigal they're on the "King's Highway."

Imatterial, Madrical was one of the Free Citys of the North, with its own king and infostructure; that a road be named "Kings highway" is not unheard of.

: But basically, for me, it comes down to: GURPS says so,
: and the games don't disagree.

I think I have pointed out several spots where the games and common sence do disagree. But thats just my own observations. Does anyone have any hard evedence to the contrary? If so PLEASE post it.

Respectfully,

Drunken Ghol
