The Head was mostly used by the nine for direction to the lost artifacts which Connacht scattered around the world.
[This is a good argument for the Head=Connacht=Balor theory cause the head seems to know where Connact put alot of these things. That or The Head was someone close to Connacht and Balor just happened to be fetching the armour at the same time as the Head sent Alric out]
Either way, the Head sends Alric out specifically looking for the armour 'cause it knows where the armour is. I'm 100% sure that statment "Balor, who wore the mantle of the Leveler" from the final naration of MythII is just figurative language meaning that Balor was the physical manifestation of the Leveler in this age. There is no actual "Mantle of the Leveler." Obviously TheLeveler/Balor didn't think figurative language was sufficient protection for precious physical self;), so he snaged the armour... and seeing as Alric was out there as well, snaged him too.
