Why not propose that it was a different Avatara? The last we hear of them in the journal texts, the Nine are down to "something like the Three;" we know that Maeldun died after the war. That leaves one more Avatara to get whacked. Maybe Alric decided "there could be only one," and sent him off to oversee the Devoid mission at a discreet distance--but not so discreet that he'd survive.
