It seems more likely that they died with Balor. I don't mean the spell that kept em alive failed but they were probably killed off. Since they were dead and could no longer reproduce their numbers would dwindle after a war like that. Also they wouldn't go into the mountains (perhaps with the exception of a few who had remarkable self control) because they held to much contempt for the living to wait for another dark lord to show up before they attacked. They probably all died durring desperate attacks on human settlements.
