GURPS Myth is nice but it isn't entirely accurate, (like when it says Alric is probably Moagim but first of all Tireces became Moagim and second heroes become levelers not vice versa) I'm not saying it's wrong here but you should keep it in mind. I think the journal writer was a warrior because of the "I was falling back from 2 myrmidons" thing but I don't think we ever control him. He probably knew he could do more good observing and giving appropriate orders than fighting and trying to command at the same time. He probably wouldn't have fought the myrmidons but they are pretty fast and caught him.
