I dunno about anything but your first question. According to GURPS, Alric shouldn't have won. Soulblighter's attempt to shatter the Cloudspine might actually be thought of as an attempt to get the cycle back on track by making this a Dark Age. Or, it might be thought of as a further blow to the cycle, since by getting himself killed he destroyed the best candidate for the next Leveller, so that this unnatural Light Age may continue for an even longer period. Either way, Alric's victory was the first thing that damaged the cycle.
