By the high middle ages, Wyrd (spelled Weird, from which we get the modern English word) was simply another name for destiny. One could say one was compelled by one's weird to do a certain thing, etc. Most likely this was a case where a Pagan god was incorporated into Christian mythology as an abstract force--much the way Fortuna, who was worshipped by the Romans as a personified deity, became a poetic conceit under Christianity but was still widespread and popular enough that Chaucer wrote poems to her.
