There is a shade named Mazzarin on one of the levels, but whether this is the same person as the Avatara mentioned in Alric's flavor text is a question that has lead to endless debate on this forum (check the archives). Personally I don't see the problem--avatara turn into shades all the time. The argument (which I'm probably misrepresenting) is that Mazzarin was a good guy, and therefore unlikely to turn himself into a powerful instrument of the dark. I would suggest that since good guys turn into bad guys (and vice versa) all the time in Myth, this isn't a problem. The other problem is that the Mazzarin shade can be killed by about three berserks, while in life he could wipe out wave after wave of thrall. I would counter with the argument that the process of becoming a shade takes a lot out of you, but that's just me.
