It's thought by a number of people (**cleverly avoids personal accountability**) that Balor got to it first. The armor he's wearing when you finally kill him may be that same suit, its powers of invulnerability-casting canceled or weakened by the Eblis Stone.

We don't know. The last emperor we know of before Alric was Ceiscoran, so it may have been him.
