Shiver's Nightmare Dream (which she was using on Rabican) conjured up an image of Moagim taunting him, and some connection between him and current events (no doubt just some clue to the cyclical nature of things, Balor being a Leveller like Moagim).

: leveler? I'm puzzled a lot on that one. Since Connacht
: slew Moagim, the leveler before balor, whom he
: eventually becomes, wouldn't alric, having slain

: the hell isn't anyone in the world of myth figuring
: this out? You'd figure there'd be some extremist heron
: guard faction that would want to kill Alric so he
: doesn't become the leveler.
As Sili (or was it Dan?) already pointed out, Alric isn't neccesarily doomed to become the next Leveller because he's not supposed to be alive. This is supposed to be a Dark age, and in the only other recorded Dark age, the Wind Age, the Hero who opposed the Leveller got killed, even though the Leveller died as well. Though perhaps it doesn't neccesarily have to go in that order... it's still early into the current Era, and if Alric gets killed sometime soon, the cycle will still be on track.
Also, Muirthemne never fell during the Wind Age, despite the Myrkridia and their horrors on the world. Perhaps this still is a Dark age, and Balor, Soulblighter, and other future attacks will keep on destroying all but a pocket of civilization, one after another, just allowing enough time for the Light to rebuild a little, until a new Great Hero arises (Alric should have died by then) and cleanses the world.
