Here is what I think.
A) Mazzarin was the leader of the Nine a long thime ago, and for a while it had no leader, so Alric did replace him.
B) Our dear old feind the Watcher made Mazzarin a shade, like he did with so other Avatara.
C) The Watcher never had the dream of unlife that was Balor. Soulblighter later got it. (I think thats from the Myth 2 booklet, saying Soulblighter " Discovered Balors most gaurded secret, the creation of undead," or something to that effect).
