Actually...i remember Mazzarin being the former leader of the nine. And in the TFL thrall flavor, it shows how Mazzarin met his fate at the hands of the watcher, who, being bahl'al, possessor of the dream of undeath, made him a shade. After Mazzarin died, Alric replaced him.
