: I've actually never seen "mance" used as a
: synonym for magic, *except* in a couple of
: sci-fi/fantasy books and the Myth tags (which, I
: assume, is where you're getting "pyromancer"
: from). It only comes up that way in
: "necromancy" (as far as I know) because
: almost all the old magicians who raised the dead were
: trying to do so in order to have them foretell the
: future, not to create zombies and such.

Grab a good 700 page dictionary and you're in business. Mine gave "divination" as the short and sweet definition for the suffix "-mancy". If you ask me, scholomancy is a word Bungie made up, since words like avatara, wizard, warlock, and magician are all overused in fantasy. My guess is that they figured it was too long or too hard for people to remember, so they just went with "warlocks".
Wouldn't using a scholomancer have been cool? :)
