: NYX: Nyx, in Greek mythology, female personification of
: night but also a great cosmogonical figure, feared
: even by Zeus, the king of the gods.
: According to one tradition, she was the daughter of Chaos
: and the mother of numerous primordial powers,
: including Sleep and Death. Another tradition made her
: the daughter and successor of Phanes, a creator god;
: she continued to advise her own successors (Uranus,
: her son by Phanes; Cronus, youngest son of Uranus; and
: Zeus) by means of her oracular gifts. Throughout
: antiquity she caught the imagination of poets and
: artists but was seldom worshiped
: WYRD: Mentioned in a section on Beowulf, referred to as
: the fate of all men.
in my campaign Nyx is also the child of chaos, and i didn't even now anything about the greek myths.
what a coinsidence.
: TYR: Tyr, Old Norse TİR, Old English TIW, or TIU, one of
: the oldest gods of the Germanic peoples and a somewhat
: enigmatic figure. He was apparently the god concerned
: with the formalities of war--especially treaties--and
: also, appropriately, of justice. It is in his
: character as guarantor of contracts, guardian of
: oaths, that the most famous myth about him may be
: understood: as a guarantee of good faith, he placed
: his hand between the jaws of the monstrous wolf Fenrir
: while the gods, pretending sport but intending a trap,
: bound the wolf; when Fenrir realized he had been
: tricked he bit off Tyr's hand (hence Tyr's
: identification as the one-handed god). Tyr came to be
: identified by the Romans with their own Mars, hence
: dies Marti (Mars' Day) came to be rendered Tısdagr
: (Tuesday).
as far as i remember Fenris that is the reaql name of the wolf bit tyrs hand off because it was in pain when the wire that the gods had placed around its neck startened to tighten.
and actuelly that day is called tirsday ( in denmark) i dont know what they call it in the other former ciking countries of norway and sweden.
tyr was a god of warfare, the more diciplined one while thor the god of thunder was the god of just beat em up warfare.
and by the way tyr was the son of odin. and fenris was the son of loke who was a kind of brother to odin ( they had mixed their blood) fenris's sister was a lady name hel who was a very nast banned to the underworld and a halfrotten face kind of a girl, fenris's other brother was the midgaards worm who were the mortal enemy of thor, who was the brother of tyr and balder wich were latter killed by a blind god who were fooled by loke to kill him.
and so on until ragnarok, the apocylypse
: (Maybe Tyr had a very good justice system!)
: MUIRTHEMNE: ...The formulaic and poetic language of the
: Irish cycles is admirably preserved in Lady Gregory's
: retelling of the stories Cuchulain of Muirthemne
: (1902)... (Cuchulain was an Irish hero. I presume that
: Muirthemne was a place in Ireland. Bungie seem to have
: used quite a lot of Irish stuff).
: LLANCARFAN: Morgannwg, English GLAMORGAN, historic region
: and former county, southern Wales. The region, forming
: a quarter circle between the Taff and Neath rivers,
: consists of a northern, barren, upland moor,
: interspersed with narrow river valleys and a southern
: section, comprising an undulating plain known as the
: Vale of Glamorgan and extending into the Gower
: Peninsula (coming to this). The earliest traces of
: people within the region are human remains from the
: Paleolithic Period that were discovered in the caves
: on the southern coast of the Gower Peninsula. At the
: time of the Roman invasion the area was inhabited by
: the Silures, whose conquest by the Romans began about
: AD 75. The Romans later built roads throughout the
: region to link their military forts. Important centres
: of Celtic Christianity in the region in the 6th
: century include Llandaff, associated with St.
: Dubricius of Dyfrig and St. Teilo, and the great
: monastic settlements of Llancarfan, Llandough, and
: Llantwit Major.
: GOWER: Gower is mainly a plateau 150-450 feet (45-140 m)
: in height, into which many short streams have incised
: narrow, steep-sided valleys. Above the rolling plateau
: surfaces are some ridges, such as that from Penclawdd
: to Swansea, across the neck of the peninsula, and the
: Cefn Bryn ridge in the west.
: ...
: Today the Gower is an agricultural area, with dairying
: and, in places, market gardening. In 1956 it was
: officially designated an area of outstanding natural
: beauty, and tourism has become increasingly important
: (Hmmm! In Myth, Gower is a 'dodgy' area that doesn't
: sound a particularly nice place to go). The eastern
: section has become part of the Swansea metropolitan
: area. Pop. (1973 est.) Gower rural district, 17,220
: GHOL: ...Ghol, a dried fish product used in making
: isinglass, is exported to Europe...
