Maybe it's like the anti-life equation that Darkseid was always looking for but never found (any Jack Kirby fans out there?). Rather than an undeath spell, in that case it would be a method by which one could destroy peoples' minds and make them your willing slaves, whether they were dead or not.
Just a thought.
