In Response To: Codex Questions (Josh)

: The Codex is a magical book that tells the destiny of
: every living creature, correct? It also goes into some
: detail ("Against my better judgment, I opened the
: Codex last night to a random page andread about the
: life of a man not yet born, who would resurrect the
: Myrkridia and visit horrors on the world without equal
: in history or myth."). I'm assuming after the war
: with Soulblighter, Alric still had the Codex (would
: you give up something that valuable?), so what's
: stoping him from going into the Codex and looking up
: the entry on Mydred and reading something to the
: effect of "faked death so he could be next
: Leveller"? That said, he could look at his own
: entry and maybe see "became next Leveller after
: Balor" and figure out a way to stop the
: transistion. It's not like he would suffer much
: because the cycle might already be thrown out of
: whack. Besides, hes a hero, and I thought those guys
: did things for the greater good of man. Kill himself
: for the greater good of society.

I don't know how to start either, so here goes. The way I see it, if the book tells the destiny of every being that ever was, is, or will be, that means that what it says is final. You don't just look in the book, see what's going to happen, and say I don't like that. That is what WILL happen.

Have you ever read or heard about the full implications of time travel? If not, I suggest you do. The main part I'm getting at here is that if you go back in time and change something, the future will be horribly &@$*ed because of what you did. Now, the codex is the future. If Alric screwed with his destiny, then he will screw up the future, and everything will be screwed up.

Soulblighter tried this. His part in the codex probably said something like "will be a general(?) in Connacht's army, will come back 1000 years later to serve as a fallen lord called soulblighter, and died when Balor was killed." Damas may have read about his destiny, and being the badass that he is, went and learned the dark arts before he became a fallen lord, so that he could sustain himself after Balor died. When Balor died, and soulblighter escaped, that screwed up his destiny. What's more, he also tried to be the leveler at the wrong time.

Now look at what's happened to Damas. He's been trapped inside a computer game and is being killed every time some gamer decides to play through "The Forge." Unending torture if ya ask me. :)
No really, he's thought to be being tortured by the Gods that set the cycle in motion. Soulblighter disrupted the cycle by disrupting his DESTINY. It was an age of light when Soulblighter did his thing, so light was destined to win. BUT, he $@&%ed with destiny, and defeated light in many of his battles. When he was defeated, dead or not (see posts on SB from long ago) he was punished horribly by the gods that set the cycle in motion. If he had just been a normal guy, Balor's defeat would have been where it all ended, but he ruined everything that the codex stood for, and paid the ultimate price.

Damn, ranting again. Where was I? I guess my point is this. His destiny was supposed to be inescapable. By trying to escape, he screwed everything up and pissed the gods off. Pissing gods off is not smart no matter how you look at it.

That's my 2 cents (more like 8 since it took all that brain power to type this).
