: My first example will be Myrdred. Mr. Deciever in TFL was
: nothing but a bad guy that had a really cool fight
: with Mr. Watcher. Didn't you ever wonder why he got in
: that fight, or what ever became of him? In SB, we find
: out that Myrdred was actually a previous Avatara that
: was bent to Balor's will. He went nuts, and was
: somewhat of a good friend of the trow. Etc, etc, etc,
: etc, yada yada yada. There's a tiny bit more info on
: him in SB than there was in TFL, plus, there are more
: things to wonder about. What really made him go
: insane. Did he really die, or did he escape in Phelot?
: Did he know Shiver before Balor came?
: There is also the issue of Soulblighter's death. If
: you've read some previous posts here (I'm not sure
: exactly which ones, but they have to do with
: soulblighter) you would know about the issue of
: soulblighter hiding his heart and face in some temple
: in the untamed lands. When he fell into tharsis, the
: deciever didn't have that crow, so Badass Mr.
: Soulblighter may have escaped. We don't know for sure.
: Anyway, as I said before. The story of SB was not as good
: as TFL, but it was still good. It still deserves
: credit. There are games out there that people say have
: good story, but really SUCK!!!! I've been told that
: Unreal had a good story. After I played past the 8th
: level, I realized that the story was really nothing
: compared to what Bungie had ever done. You see, that's
: the great thing about Bungie. They make good games
: with good stories. The marathon trilogy's story is
: still a hot topic of conversation, which amazes me.
: Those games are old, yet still drawing a following.
: Why? Because the story is so damned cool. I haven't
: seen any other game (non-RPG game, that is, but
: they're made for story) that has a story capable of
: competing with Marathon or Myth. That is why I will
: continue to buy Bungie's products without thinking
: twice, and any other games will wait. Because Bungie
: is the only computer game company that I know of
: currently that knows the importance of having a good
: story.
Maybe it's just me, but I liked the way they introduced the Deceiver and the Watcher in Myth. I got a strong impression that they wanted little to do with this fight with the legion and would rather duke it out with each other again. Afterall, the Deceiver spent a year looking for the Watcher's arm and it was very cool to hear that the Watcher stormed through the Cloudspine and clashed with the Deceiver's army and for the first time hear that there has been a long history between the two. I enjoyed that aspect of the story very much. True, Myth 2 did give detail on the Deceiver's previous lifestyle as an Avatar and his inception into Balor's Fallen Lords, but I think it all boils down to the fact that I am a Watcher junkie :)
To me, he's the most intriguing character (along with the Head, whom I think is the fifth Fallen Lord, and was a high ranking official for Connacht alongside Soulblighter) and I would have loved to learn more about him and his hatred for the Deceiver and his love for Shades. Perhaps, since Shades are dead Avatar, the Watcher killed some of the Deceiver's Avatar friends or family (whatever would tick him off) and made them into Shades, and that drove him nuts and his passion to kill the Watcher was born then, or maybe it goes even deeper, we are never given hints.
I'm a stickler for history, and I guess I was just expecting more info on the history of the Wind Age and how the Fallen Lords played into that era. Perhaps I'll write a book... :)
And yes, there are barely any games that can compete with Bungie's games in the department of story. Some RPGs can't even keep up, and that's sad. Now, I just have to sit and wait for the expansion pack along with the story it contains and the big bang, Halo.
