The idea here is that back when Myrdred was a general in Connacht's army he started going nuts, and the other generals (Damas, the guy in charge of the Heron Guard, etc) decided he was too powerful to be left on his own recognizance. So they took his scepter away (to keep him from binding anyone) and trundled him up to this mountain villa that was supposedly escape-proof, with just his eight body servants as companions. They did it for the good of the empire but obviously the Deceiver won't see it that way. Now, several hundred years later, it has become necessary to dig him up again, and this level kind of shows you what's happened in the intervening time.
