: I've been away from the Myth scene for awhile.,
: particularly because Myth 2 was not what I expected or
: wanted. Not in the game department, it was a good
: game, but the story and mystery the original had is
: nowhere present in Myth 2. It seems they went all out
: to create a very good story in the first one, and many
: people (to this day) are still trying to decipher the
: story. When I heard they were making a sequel, I got
: really excited because I thought they were going to
: answer some questions and delve deeper into the
: characters and their history.
: Myth 1 had so many characters, a Head that tricked
: everyone and a story that you kept you guessing who
: everyone really was and what their motives were. Myth
: 2 provided no extension of this. There was Alric and
: Soulblighter and the ressurection of the Myrkridia
: which was not as compelling as it should have been.
: Back when everyone was complaining about all the bugs
: and over0sights bungie had I was wondering why they
: released a sequel that seemingly had no story that we
: can disect for another two years. It's interesting
: that this forum still discusses the original story
: instead of Myth 2's story, and I can see why. There is
: no story.
: And since is has been a recent topic, I feel when the
: Great Devoid exploded there was a shidt in that
: world's balance and Soublighter took advantage of it.
: Every 1000 years there is a Leveler and a Hero,
: perhaps Soulblighter planned Balor's death with the
: Head (as mentioned in the story section) and the
: Leveler died prematurely and someone had to continue
: the reign until the the time when Balor was supposed
: to die, so Soulblighter took control for 60 years, his
: time was up and he died as every other Leveler has
: done before him.
Alright, first of all, I'll agree with you only a little. Myth 2's story was not quite as cool as the story of TFL. You are very correct about that.
But, I think it is much better than you give it credit for. You say that there are no intriguing characters, and no characters that are revealed better than they were in TFL. I beg to differ.
My first example will be Myrdred. Mr. Deciever in TFL was nothing but a bad guy that had a really cool fight with Mr. Watcher. Didn't you ever wonder why he got in that fight, or what ever became of him? In SB, we find out that Myrdred was actually a previous Avatara that was bent to Balor's will. He went nuts, and was somewhat of a good friend of the trow. Etc, etc, etc, etc, yada yada yada. There's a tiny bit more info on him in SB than there was in TFL, plus, there are more things to wonder about. What really made him go insane. Did he really die, or did he escape in Phelot? Did he know Shiver before Balor came?
There is also the issue of Soulblighter's death. If you've read some previous posts here (I'm not sure exactly which ones, but they have to do with soulblighter) you would know about the issue of soulblighter hiding his heart and face in some temple in the untamed lands. When he fell into tharsis, the deciever didn't have that crow, so Badass Mr. Soulblighter may have escaped. We don't know for sure.
There are many more, but none that pop into my head at a moment's notice. I really should research things before I open my mouth :).
Anyway, as I said before. The story of SB was not as good as TFL, but it was still good. It still deserves credit. There are games out there that people say have good story, but really SUCK!!!! I've been told that Unreal had a good story. After I played past the 8th level, I realized that the story was really nothing compared to what Bungie had ever done. You see, that's the great thing about Bungie. They make good games with good stories. The marathon trilogy's story is still a hot topic of conversation, which amazes me. Those games are old, yet still drawing a following. Why? Because the story is so damned cool. I haven't seen any other game (non-RPG game, that is, but they're made for story) that has a story capable of competing with Marathon or Myth. That is why I will continue to buy Bungie's products without thinking twice, and any other games will wait. Because Bungie is the only computer game company that I know of currently that knows the importance of having a good story.
Correct me if I'm wrong about anything. I think I've been ranting, so I'll stop now ;)
