I feel your pain man, my history teacher is obsessed with JFK, it is disturbing.
Anyway I beleave I have an idea why they might have used this name for an importent, if obscure charicter in the Myth world.
It seems that for about a century the French royle house was having trouble producing legitimat children in a timely fashon, and if they did, most where died or where killed before the Children where of age. Sence the religuse establishment ( and you can compere the cathlic church to the circles of Avatars from the cath'bruig in this case) was the only force with the training to run a country as large as France.

Perhaps Mazzerin was a regent of sorts to the cath'bruig. If he had not died history would have been very different, with Mazzerin becoming emporer insead of Connoct.
Maybe the reason The Watcher was so intent on destroying the man was becouls he know if Mazzerin ever gained acsess to the Ibis crown he would be hunted down and destroyed.
Another possibiaty is that bungie chose that name becouls it sounded cool and they like makeing people like us run around in circles untill we fall over.
