No, that is not essentially the plot behind Marathon! Marathon is about a rampant AI who called an alien race in to attack your ship and the first extrasolar human colony, but then you've got to side with him (Durandal, the AI) to save the ship, while watching your dear friend Leela get torn to bits (and bytes, too. Well, exobytes, but still...). Then you have to free an good alien slave race from the bad aliens, and help them free their homeworld and rediscover their past, all the while uncovering the secrets of the universe and an eternal struggle between good (Jjaro) and evil (W'rkncacnter). THEN you discover that you have been a god all this time, Destiny himself, shaping history and jumping between lives and alternate realities. And you see the fscking universe, die, fergodsake!
If it were just "the Pfhor are attacking, defend the ship" then you would be right, but there's so much more than that. I mean, you could say Myth is just "the undead are attacking, save the world", but it's so much more than that.

Apparently Caliban was a real person, the king who ruled Madrigal before Alric, or something like that. It's in GURPS. So, he's not really Alric's alter-ego.
