I was referring to the second part of that sentence, "what brings about immortality in a truly exceptional person merely restores the vitality of lesser men." Identity, not similarity, is suggested here. And it doesn't say the one "spell" has its roots in the other, it says the one "ritual" has its roots in the other "initiation rites." Putting these together, we can conclude that the spell's the same but the ceremonial trappings are different. Or at least I can conclude that. I've got a license for it. :)
