Berel was born in Madrigal on August 3, 2518 (that makes him about 23 when soulblighter was cast into Tharsis). He lived in Madrigal with his parents until age 10, when his parents were killed by the city guards. His parents worked smuggling illegal materials (such as certain magical items that the king didn't want around) into the city and selling them on the black market. The guards, after killing his parents, took Berel with them to enlist him with the legion. Berel never did like his parents all that much, so he was a little happy to be with the group that had led to their downfall. After four years of grueling training at the Legion boot camps, Berel didn't quite like the organization anymore. The only thing that kept him going was his strict code of honor, and his intense urge to be the best. At age fourteen he left Madrigal with the Thunder Battalion to patrol the areas near the Forest Heart. Bandit activity had been increasing in those parts, so the Provincal government sent the greenest battalion in the Legion to scout out the area. In his time with the Thunder Battalion, Berel made some good friends. Chadwick, August, and Marcus were all soldiers in his part of the battalion, and they all loved to spend time together telling stories of the ancient times. Joining them were a few of the legion bowmen: Illus, Thomas, Frederick, and Seigfried. Berel wanted to be part of something big when he grew up. He didn't have any ideas about how, but he just wanted to be famous and influential at some point.
Throughout the next seven years the Thunder Battalion patrolled near the Forest Heart, Bagrada, Stoneheim, the Great Devoid, and Seven Gates. They always got the assignments that no other legion would take because the entire battalion was made up of outcasts like Berel. On August 3 of 2540, the Thunder Battalion came across a sight that would change them all forever. After patrolling parts of Bagrada for more than a month, they were all quite bored, and not ready for any surprises. They found a pack of roving soulless, which immediately started to bombard the battalion. After a nasty fight most of the soulless were dead or fleeing, but Thunder battalion had taken heavy casualties. Berel was badly wounded, and Siegfried, Chadwick, and illus were all dead. The battalion marched to Scales in an effort to warn someone about the undead, but it wasn't long before that city was overrun by the hordes. The battalion was ordered with many of the other city's inhabitants through a world knot to Madrigal where they awaited orders. Apparently some people had already been sent with the legion to seek out Soulblighter and the Total Codex. Not long after this, the city was invaded, but the battalion was already on it's way to Tandem. They arrived a few days after Alric, despite having left two days earlier. The battalion stayed with Alric at Tandem to fight Shiver's forces, and left for Muirthemne afterwards. As usual the battalion was kept out of any heavy fighting because they were unreliable. On the way to Muirthemne, the Legion was attacked many times by the Fallen. By the time they arrived at the ancient ruins, the entire Thunder company except a few archers and Berel were dead. They were reassigned to other battalions where they would not get to see much combat. Throughout the rest of the war, Berel was assigned places where the fallen were likely to never attack. Only once did he even see a myrkridia, and that was only a carcass that was dragged into his campsite.
Despite being trained for combat at a very early age, Berel's experience is still low. He never saw much combat, and he is more than a little disappointed at that. All of his friends are dead also, so his new home (a barracks in Madrigal) is less than hospitable. His dreams of doing something famous are still there, but he has almost lost all hope.
