The main issue with stealth is why Andir didn't hear anything. When the manual says something like "the noise he made must have drowned out the rustle of another bird's wings," you know it's implying the opposite. And then he turns around and there's an entire circle of the things!

As for the numbness, if you read the description it's pretty clear the bite introduced some sort of magical or mundane poison into his body. Notice that the paralysis spreads from the peck.

We've discussed this in the past, actually; IIRC the two theories we came up with were either that Soulblighter recovered a few of the Myrks from a Tain Shard without the Summoner's help (perhaps using them to find the Summoner himself), or that this intro actually takes place some time into the war, and that this village simply never heard what was going on until the Myrks were freed.
