: Hi. Stupid comet question here.
: In the cutscene for "Shadow of the Mountain,"
: in TFL, we can clearly see a comet hanging in the
: heavens over Tharsis. Umm... perhaps I'm being daft
: here, but for whom is this comet? I'm under the
: impression that the comet arrives to herald some great
: hero or villain... but at this point in the game's
: story, Balor's been around for years and years. Is
: this for Alric, then? I guess I'd figured that the
: comet would show up when a hero or villain first
: appeared/was born... maybe it shows up because Alric
: is about to claim his destiny as a Good Guy? Or does
: is the cutscene showing us Thrarsis and the comet at
: once to suggest something about Soulblighter? But
: then, this doesn't make sense because we all know SB
: *isn't/won't be* the Leveller. So... basically...
: what's this comet doing here? What am I missing?
Its for Alric. It comes at about the time that a new power is arising. The
comet heralds in a new age and ages begin at a turn of power, not when someone
is born.
Its my turn to be daft and ask who is Thrarsis?
: Also, I'm curious as to why Soulblighter wanted Balor's
: head at the end of TFL. How would this help him?
: Clearly this isn't some sort of allegiance to Balor at
: this point, as he's already dead... what's up with
: this?
Balor is SB's general. SB's duty was to protect him. I guess you could say he
fought for honor. ANd Balor wasn't dead yet, so if SB got the head, he could
probably sew it back on Balor's body and Balor would be good as new.
: Finally, does anyone else find the little story in M2's
: manual particulary...
: high-school-english-student-journalish? I thought I
: was reading one of R.L. Stine's _Goosebumps._

Okay. I can buy that.

Sorry -- I shouldn't have assumed everyone would immediately recognize every
geographical feature on the Myth map. :) Tharsis is the volcano, which is
named in M2, and referred to as, I think, "the legendary forge of the Trow."

I'm not so sure I can go along with this part. Clearly, SB has proven to be
someone with his own motives. I can't see why he would stand in the way of the
Legion finishing off his (at this point at least totally incapacitated, if not
dead) boss. Certainly, there'd be no repercussions for him, unless, I suppose,
he didn't realize that his powers weren't intrinsically linked to Balor. I
suppose that's something to think about. Hmm. I'm sure there's something I'm
forgetting that shows that SB did know he wasn't linked to Balor like that.
Okay, here's another thought, then -- in the opening cutscene for M2, we see a
replay of Mr. Kamikazi dorf giving the ol' head a toss, and SB reacting rather
negatively. But then, right before he leaves, he turns suddenly and reacts to
something over his shoulder. What's going on there? Is he seeing something,
realizing he's free of Balor's control, or what?
Bonus extra question: Who was the Summoner? Why was he doing what he was
doing? Why, aside from hasty writing on the part of Bungie, was he given so
little time in the game, and how did the Deceiver know him? (I'm taking their
brief conversation as an indication that they knew each other somehow.)

: What follows is the final narration for Myth2. SPOILERS
: obviously
:
: The saviours of each golden age were men who had risen to
: face the Dark and never turned away. They were men of
: unflinching heroism who would not rest until they had
: loosened the bloodless grip of wicked things which had
: dominated their lands. Many of these heroes were
: doomed to return in the following age as Fallen Lords,
: destroying all they had fought so hard to preserve.
: Although the hero of every age of light is different,
: every dark age is ushered in by the same beast Û a
: transient divinity that seeks only conflict Û The
: Leveler. And so Tireces returned as Moagim to end the
: Age of Reason Û and Connacht, the great hero of the
: Wind Age, returned as Balor to lay waste to the
: greatest empire the world had ever known.
Bear with me I have not gotten Myth II yet either...
This explanation clears up some things and seems to jive with some others
things I have seen which I assume was pre-release stuff. But one thing I don't
get is how is Balor both Connacht and evil at the same time and also how do
the fallen lords become so evil? According to this journal entry they were all
dedicated 'good guys' yet later on they are somehow corrupted. Soulblighter
was apparently Damas, and I would assume he becomes a fallen lord because of
his virtue not lack thereof, so how does he become I believe they call him the
cruelest of the fallen lords? Certainly Balor, although he is now the Leveler,
has a good deal of the old Connacht in him considering his hatred of the
myrkriddia.
Also I wonder how Balor comes into being. I would assume that the leveler
doesn't just transfer upon the death of his current avatar. Did Connacht ever
actually die? Is Balor and maybe some fallen lords the victims of some sorta
of necromancy, perhaps just super shades?
Finally, what is the deal with the Watcher then? He is a fallen lord yet he
was alive and I assume evil when Connacht was around. Was he ever good? Was he
left over from a previous incarnation of the Leveler. I think Forrest referred
to three of the fallen lords as 'ancient evils', but this included
Soulblighter who clearly is not from a previous Leveler incarnation. And he
referred to the three other fallen lords as 'turned from the light'. I believe
Soulblighter is classified as undead in Myth I at least, are all the fallen
lords supposed to be undead? The Watcher(Bahl'al?) certainly seemes to have
some undead characteristics.
***************************************************************************
My thoughts on everything? The Head started the cycles (see ìThe Head (Part II)î in another thread). He created The Leveler, or perhaps they were created at the same time by another being. He wrote the Codex, which predicts everything that will happen. Every thousand years, a comet appears in the sky, and as it does, an evil force lead by The Leveler comes to the land are starts tearing everything down. As the comet passes through the sky, The Head manipulates events so that a great hero arises and stands against the Leveler, eventually killing him. Then the evil passes from the land, just as the comet from the sky. The great hero reigns for a long time, yadda yadda, and a thousand years later The Leveler returns to commandeer whoeverís in power, which is usually the great hero of the era.
As for ages and eras, hereís what Iíve figured out. An Era is a thousand years, most of which is light, but with a period of dark at the end. The different periods, of light and dark, are the ages. An age does not have a set amount of time. Hereís the chart Iíve worked out, as best I can. Corrections welcome. Iím unsure about the Axe Age; the Free Cities of the North were settled then, implying that it was an age of light, but thereís a missing name for the age of Moagimís reign, and Axe Age seems like it might fit in there.
