I have a guess. He saw behind him a hill that was beyond the blast radius of the Devoid. And Alric (with part of the army that assulted Balor's fortress) was standing on the hill. SB would be pretty pissed if he planned this great trap to kill Alric and then he realizes at the end that Alric is still alive.
