: At first this appeared to be a sacred tome, the
: long-dreamt of Total Codex that would speak to all the
: mysteries. Then people started noticing something.
: There were things in GURPS that didn't look...
: quite... right. The Deceiver, it said, was alive and
: well. Sure, we are all eyewitnesses to the fact that
: he got blown to smithereens--surely there must be some
: rational explanation for this. Nope. He's just alive
: and well.
And it's explained that people frequently come back from the dead in Myth. No problem there.
: Were Shiver and Ravanna the same person? The
: Deceiver seems to think so. The Myth 2 flavor text
: states so quite explicitly. The M:TFL pregame
: promotional information says something quite
: different.
Actually, the prerelease info didn't mention Shiver at all. It listed Soulblighter, The Deceiver, Bahl'al, The Voiceless One, Bonesplitter, and the Faceless Man. Since SB and the D obviously kept the same names, and we pinned Bahl'al as the Watcher, and Shiver obviously isn't a faceless MAN, that left her as the Voiceless One or Bonesplitter. And we argued incessantly over which it was. Then GURPS said "The Voiceless One" and that settled it. Bonesplitter is The Lurker, and The Faceless Man is the one unknown.
: Inquiring mythers wanted to know. The
: answer GURPS gives: yes, they were. Except when they
: weren't. The rest was left as an exercize for the
: student.
That's what we're debating now - the nature of how they were the same person and yet sometimes not. But they are the same person, or spirit, or somehow the same, that much we know for sure.
: Final disclaimer: the above is merely my humble opinion,
: which I advance purely as an attempt to help reconcile
: what I see as a major problem. If you disagree (as
: many, I'm sure, do) please don't attack me for stating
: how I feel.
I'M NOT ATTACKING YOU, DAMNIT! ;-)
Seriously though, I tend to believe GURPS over characters in the Myth world, because characters in the Myth world are limited by being inside it and not being able to see it all and know for sure. But things stated about the world from outside it are what define what the world is. But if Bungie, as an outside source and not through a character in Myth, says something that contradicts GURPS, I'd believe them of course.
