: Oops. I was looking at the wolf.

: That could be accurate. Berserks have to farm and fish
: and sail and stuff, and all Herons do is fight.
: Berserks have to know more.

Are you kidding? The Heron Guards are practically immortal (correct me if I'm wrong about that, since I don't have GURPS Myth) ... you'd think they'd have the time to pick up a lot of wisdom. When they were Journeymen especially, they seemed to be the wisest of the units. What does a Berserk need to know? Sailing is hardly the most intellectual of pursuits. Knowing how to sail is not the same thing as being smart. I'm not saying that it's easy to sail or to navigate, but just that neither skill necessarily implies a great mind. The Herons, as the elite guard of the Cath Bruig, are quite knowledgeable in herbal lore, which is probably more intellectual than sailing is. They were the guards of Muirthemne, which was apparently the greatest city on the continent barring those of the Trow. They even seem more cultured than the Berserks. They wear armour for one thing, and don't cover their bodies with paint.

Again, I'm not saying that people who sail, or that people who cover their bodies with warpaint are any less intelligent than other people. Please don't get mad at me if you are a sailor who covers him/herself with warpaint. All I'm saying is that these activities do not require or imply a great deal of intelligence, and (in the case of warpaint) seem to connote themselves with being 'uncivilized', which in turn connotes less intelligence. By contrast, the Herons have a detailled knowledge of herb lore, which (I would argue) is more intellectual than sailing, they come from a great and advanced civilization, etc. etc.
