In light of the points you bring up, I'd change my theory to: he teleported his troops, and the remains of Balor, to the doomed forces fighting in front of Rhi'anon, to show them that their deaths had not been for nothing, before sending the head and its chosen couriers to the Great Devoid. This would fit with my theory that the titanic explosion at Rhi'anon was Balor's body detonating, at the same time that his head blew up at the Devoid. Alric may have intentionally dropped the body off in front of the fortress to destroy the half-million Dark minions and grant the remaining Legionnaires a more merciful death.
