Because, as I said, his powers would naturally be weaker over long distances. What good would converting one guy in the Watcher's army and attacking Bahl'al with a low-powered cloudkill do? All it would do is tip off the Watcher that Myrdred's after him again.
I realize the theory takes some faith, but what are the alternatives? As far as I'm concerned, believing that Myrdred can use his powers weakly over long distances is a *lot* easier than believing that he can get blown to bits and simply reintegrate again.
