: The Deceiver--well, either Balor's death contributed to
: his defeat at the Stair of Grief, or there was just
: nothing to see, because he was already comatose.
: Concerning Shiver, she pretty much already was powerless.
: That she survived is not surprsing--Alric, after all,
: didn't say that the Fallen Lords would die, per se.
: Besides, when he said powerless, it's clear he wasn't
: taking into account those Lords already dead. He
: probably just meant that the ones still living would
: be debilitated.

Which there is no evidence of.

: I'm with Dan on this one. They had power before, they
: didn't "get their power through Balor," why
: can't they regain it? All that the nature of their
: relationship suggests is some sort of symbiosis--by
: binding the others to him, Balor made the others
: dependent upon him, where once they had been
: independent. Breaking the bonds suddenly would weaken
: them. Also, if Soulblighter can learn new powers, why
: can't they all relearn their old powers? Finally, why
: doesn't time heal THESE wounds? You state "there
: would be no way for it to come back," and
: "that's impossible," but I don't see what
: you're basing this on. You're only speculating.

You're also speculating, so don't point that out in my argument. The Lords were bent to Balor's will, which means they all had great abilities but were now used for his bidding, much like the Taken in The Black Company. I'm not even saying they couldn't re-learn new powers, I'm saying that the Fallen Lord's power have nothing to do with Balor, so once he dies, that just means they can pursue anything they'd like.

Perhaps the Fallen Lords feel the affects of Balor's death as whatever link he had on them is broken, but I'd hardly say they were dibilitated.

: No one's suggesting that Balor outright "told"
: Alric anything. Considering that the narrator's
: passage says that he learned this about the power
: relationship "by chance" suggests, in fact,
: that he didn't learn the info by anyone else's direct
: efforts (not Balor's OR the Deceiver's), but by
: accident or luck. Without knowing the specifics, we
: can only speculate--but Balor might have let it slip
: by accident, or Alric might have read his mind, or
: detected some kind of magical control Balor exerted,
: or might have overheard it. Or, if the Deceiver was
: there, in camp with Balor, he might have heard the two
: conversing, and witnessed Balor exert his power over
: the Deceiver if, say, the D disagreed vehemently about
: something. A lot of possibilities come up--the idea
: that Balor just stated it up front is only the least
: likely of the bunch.

Wel, you've changed your stance I see.

First of all, you don't have to convince me that "the idea that Balor just stated it up front (the info) is only the least likely of the bunch." Remember, I'm the one who doesn't think Balor told Alric anything.

Now, if Balor can "exert his power over the Deceiver" than why doesn't Balor exert his power of the Watcher and Deceiver when they begin feuding and duking it out? Wouldn't Balor want his own Lords to fight the common enemy and put their differences aside? But, no. On two recorded occasions these two fought it out and decimated one of the other's army. Plus, in the most recent fight, the whole battle cost the Dark the pass. Why didn't Balor force the two to stop fighting and get back to the original plans?

Or, if Balor has bound the Lords to him, then there could be some way to weaken or punish them. Why doesn't he do this? He let's them fight each other as if he has no control or say in any of it. It's almost as if they're... independant.

And another thing, Alric can't read minds. It's never documented and its a not a known Myth-power.
