Just playing Devil's advocate here.

Actually, they had power before they met Balor. There's no reason to assume they couldn't get it back.

: to attack him with all they've got and leave his other
: Lords behind? The Leveller seeks to destroy, not twist
: the truth and get beaten.
All that makes sense assuming that's really what Alric was told. It's also possible that he learned of the link and misunderstood it's nature and elaborated.
Oh, and by letting it slip, I mean the Deceiver could have been talking to someone a bit loud, or something.
