It's not so much an issue of intelligence as culture. We've never seen any indication that berserks use magic. If there's no magic use in their area, and nothing in the culture about magic, the only Northerner who would ever even have a shot a becoming a sorcer is the occasional travelling warrior or merchant. And I don't see the North as an area with a lot of travelling merchants either. It's vaguely possible for a berserk to learn the ways of magic, but unlikely.
