: No, remember, the rescue takes place in November, *just*
: as the passes were beginning to be covered by snow.
: The Legion will not make large trips, with massive
: troop movements, across the Cloudpsine because of the
: potential for massive troop losses.

: Plus, if the Legion pushes across the Cloudspine, the
: Watcher is right on their rear flank and they would be
: pincered.

Which was kind of my point--the Dark has geared down for the winter because they expect not to face any serious resistance coming over the mountains. They are leaving the Watcher's army there, just in case. The Five Champions make use of new dwarven technology--the balloon and parachutes--which Balor and friends cannot expect because they're all used to the tech of the Wolf Age. So when the champions show up quite literally out of the blue, they catch the Deceiver's forces unaware.

: Who says they could have forseen this? The Deceiver could
: have gave Alric some info and that's that. Do you
: think the Deceiver forsaw the Watcher attacking his
: forces head-on? Of course not. The D probably figured
: Alric would march right at Balor and leave the other
: Fallen Lords to fall once their "master" had
: fallen on the sword.

What I meant was that no one could have foreseen the second coming of Soulblighter. Alric doesn't set up a deal with the Deceiver to help him later because he isn't aware--at the time--that he's going to need such help.

: The D would take this opportunity to increase his search
: efforts for the Watcher's arm and perhaps use it on
: him when the Legion abbandoned the West. But, the
: Legion grabbed the arm and in the frantic chase that
: ensued, the Deceiver let his rear guard down and was
: massively attacked by the Watcher.

Which, and sorry to belabor the point, is exactly what I think happened with the five champions, on a different scale.

: They imply that they were "bent to his will"
: which could mean that the Fallen Lord's intentions
: were now to serve Balor's desires.

Okay. My point about the possible material link was a bit thin, but hey, who knows? We're down to arguing semantics now, which is no good for anybody.

: There is no "link" that keeps the Fallen Lords
: in power. They contain their own. Balor's head is
: still alive and perhaps can talk.

GURPS, I believe, merely says that the link wasn't as strong as previously believed, and as a result the Fallen would NOT just keel over when Balor got whacked. It doesn't say anything about their being no link at all. Balor is still alive, as you say, so the link is still in force until the head is going, going gone. Therefore whatever is flowing through the link remains in effect until the final cutscene of Myth TFL--therefore we NEVER *see* a Fallen Lord after the link is broken. That's all I was on about, here.

: Remember "bent to his will" can mean various
: things. I personally take it as the Fallen Lords were
: still their own beings, with their own powers and
: goals, but their intentions were now bent towards
: destruction and the evil that the Leveller extends.

: Chris

A good theory, and "bent to his will" definitely suggests this, but there is also evidence of power flowing through the link, though the kind of power is unspecified. It isn't just Balor's will, however--it has to be some kind of practical, useful power. Mana would fit the bill, but the argument over that shows how unlikely it is. Political/Material power would also work, though it sounds (even to me, who proposed it) like a very weird interpretation of the text.
