You somehow missed my response to all this. No one is claiming that the level is of such importance that it changes the outcome of the game--it simply reflects that different mini-outcomes can occur within the game, not significant enough to say, kill Alric, or keep Soulblighter alive, but different nonetheless. Therefore, none of the narrator's journal entries differ, except for one thing--he does go to the ammo dump, or he doesn't.
Also, "Long Awaited Party" is a slightely different case. Whether or not you find the secret cave, it's clear that Balin, indeed, does blow up the stone godhead. It is not so clear that the ammo dump gets sacked right after the occurences of "A Murder of Crows." The words of one of your men, that there "has to be another way," imply that if you don't progress on to the secret level, those units do NOT go onto the secret level, causing the game to break off into two tangents, in your words. Just because this occurence has no LARGE effect doesn't mean it never happened.
