Matter of taste, I guess. I don't find either theory completely convincing or completely unconvincing. And I doubt there is only one truth. After all, the entire story of the Marathon universe wasn't decided before the first game was released. It grew and solidified as more and more games were released. Similarly, there are probably many questions which simply don't have answers right now, and will not until Bungie decides how to answer them in Myth 3, or the GURPS Myth supplement, or the Tales of the Fallen Peasants graphic novel, or whatever else is released.
